Bollywood actress Sridevi, who was the heartthrob of millions, died Saturday following a cardiac arrest in Dubai. She was 54. Born in 1963, the Bollywood diva made her debut in the film industry at the age of four.
According to a report in Filmfare, Sridevi was attending a family wedding in Dubai, accompanied by her younger daughter Khushi and husband, film producer Boney Kapoor. This is where she suffered a massive cardiac arrest.
Her brother-in-law, actor Sanjay Kapoor, confirmed the news. “Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. I just landed here, I was in Dubai and now I am flying back to Dubai. It happened roughly around 11.00-11.30. I don’t know more details yet,” he told Indian Express.
Her elder daughter, Janhvi couldn’t attend the wedding because of her shooting schedule.
Known for her iconic roles in Hindi movies like Mr India, Mawaali, Tohfa, Chandni, Chaalbaaz, Nagina, Sadma, and many more, Sridevi had over 275 acting credits to her name including those in regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
She started her child artist in Tamil movie industry. Built her career over the years and in 2013 was awarded Padmashri for her contribution to Indian cinema.
When she became a mother for the first time with daughter Janhavi, she went away from the movie business. After 15 years of hiatus, she made a stellar comeback in Gauri Shinde’s movie English Vinglish. Sridevi was last seen in the film ‘MOM’ opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye khanna.
Soon after the news of her death broke, many Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Priyanka Chopra, Sushmita Sen, Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh took to Twitter to pay their condolences.
Amitabh Bachchan wrote, “Don’t know why, feeling a strange restlessness.” “I have no words. Condolences to everyone who loved #Sridevi . A dark day. RIP,” tweeted Priyanka, alongside a still of Sridevi from her superhit film “Mr India”.
“Deeply saddened and shocked to hear about #Sridevi Ji. My prayers and condolences to the family,” Johnny Lever tweeted.
“Really Shocked and disturbed to hear that Sridevi Ma am is no more. #RIP #Sridevi,” wrote Sidharth.
Riteish Deshmukh tweeted, Terrible terrible news . Am shocked beyond words. SRIDEVI ji No More RIP, , while Sushmita wrote that she has been inconsolable since the news broke. I just heard Ma am Sridevi passed away due to a massive cardiac arrest. I am in shock cant stop crying ”
Actor Nimrat Kaur tweeted, Absolutely devastated to hear about the passing of #Sridevi. What a dark black terrible moment in time. Gutted. Cameron Bailey, Artistic Director, Toronto International Film Festival, tweeted, “Shocked to hear of the passing of India s legendary Sridevi. Honoured to have been in her presence in 2012 when she visited Toronto for English Vinglish. She made countless millions fall in love with her characters.”
